Girls Gone Wild Producer in Chickasha

It’s true. Joe Francis, the producer of the Girls Gone Wild series of DVDs recently spent some time in Chickasha, or should I say did some time in Chickasha. He didn’t spend his time shooting one of his sexually suggestive college coed videos. He was doing time in the Grady County Jail while being transferred between correctional facilities pending trial on federal charges. Best Places to Eat

Like many small towns in Oklahoma, Chickasha has some great family owned restaurants you won’t find in the big city or suburbia. Here are some of my favorites.

Jake’s Rib - Jakes is the place for BBQ in Chickasha. My favorite is the chopped beef sandwich with an order of curly fries and some cole slaw. They’re located at 100 Ponderosa Drive near the old Walmart Shopping Center. You can give them a call at (405) 222-2825.

Eduardo’s South of the Border Cafe - conveniently located at the corner of 4th street and Country Club road. Turn south when you exit from the 2nd exit from the H. E. Bailey Turnpike. Try their fajitas - you’ll love them. Their address is 3127 South 4th Street, Chickasha, OK 73018. You can phone them at (405) 222-5566.

Mama Carol’s Kitchen - Did I mention the homemade pies? Down home country cooking with daily lunch specials. Mama Carol’s is busy because the food is good. It’s located on the opposite end of 4th street closer to downtown at 625 South 4th Street. Their phone number is (405) 222-1517.

In Memory of Eddie Binyon

I was shocked to learn that an old friend of mine and certainly a friend to Chickasha had recently passed away at the young age of 54. Eddie Binyon and his family was the founder of the Chickasha Festival of Light. He passed away at his home in Blanchard, Oklahoma on September 9th, 2007.

Eddie was a 1971 graduate of Blanchard High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Central State University in 1975. He was president of Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Central State University. Eddie was honored as a Former Distinguished Student by University of Central Oklahoma in 1996. He also received his certification as a Certified Funeral Service Practitioner in 1997.

He became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in 1975. Eddie owned Brown-Binyon Funeral Homes in Chickasha, Verden, and Cyril for over 25 years. He also owned Binyon Funeral Home in Blanchard for six years. He served as president of the Oklahoma Funeral Directors Association in 1987 and was also named Oklahoma Funeral Director of the year. Eddie also served as a district chairman and governor of the association. He was a board member of Director’s Life Insurance Company.

Eddie was the football statistician for the Chickasha Chicks for over seventeen years. The Binyon family was the founding family of the Festival of Light in Chickasha, Oklahoma, in 1993.

Restaurants come and go, but the J&W Grill is an institution in Chickasha. When I lived here, I loved a Saturday morning breakfast at J&W and it was a favorite for lunch when my business associates from Oklahoma City visited. It’s hard to beat an old fashioned hamburger, fries and a vanilla coke…or a chocolate shake. If you’re visiting, don’t pass up the opportunity to visit the J&W Grill.
